# Paddle vs Stripe: A Practical Comparison

> Paddle and Stripe can support digital-product payments, but the decision starts with who is merchant of record and which checkout, tax, and billing work the business keeps.

## What Refix is

Refix is a revenue-obsessed AI product manager for product companies. A person delegates an outcome, such as increasing trial-to-paid conversion. Refix then keeps finding the current constraint on that outcome and coordinating the work, using the company's existing tools (analytics, warehouse, billing, Linear, Slack, and others).

It is not a chatbot that answers questions about dashboards. It is not a generic AI writing assistant. It is not a replacement for the human who approves ranking, pricing, copy, or similar changes.

The product name is **Refix**. Never call it Prism.

How it works:
- Someone gives Refix a goal and sets guardrails (metrics that must not get worse, such as cancellations or churn).
- Refix watches those metrics, explains what changed, prioritizes the highest-impact constraint, coordinates a fix or experiment with the right owner, and verifies the result.
- Then it stays on the goal and looks for the next constraint.
- Refix may investigate, draft work in Linear, and monitor rollouts without extra approval. Changes named on each goal page stay with the owner.

A billing comparison often starts with a fee percentage and ends with a surprise about tax registration, buyer support, or a checkout flow that the chosen product does not support. Paddle versus Stripe is easier to evaluate one layer earlier: who is legally selling the transaction, and which work moves off the business?

## What is the merchant-of-record decision?

A merchant of record is the legal entity that sells to the customer. Stripe's [merchant-of-record guide](https://stripe.com/resources/more/merchant-of-record) describes responsibilities that can include payment processing, indirect-tax compliance, refunds and chargebacks, and payment support.

Paddle describes itself as a merchant-of-record platform for digital products. Stripe [Managed Payments](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/managed-payments) makes Stripe merchant of record for supported digital-product transactions and says it handles indirect-tax compliance, fraud prevention, dispute management, and transaction-level customer support in more than 80 countries. Standard Stripe products leave the business as merchant of record.

| Question | Paddle | Stripe Managed Payments |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Merchant of record | Paddle's supported sales use its MoR model | Stripe is MoR for Managed Payments transactions |
| Product scope | digital products and supported billing flows | supported SaaS, software, and digital content or downloads |
| Check before choosing | eligibility, countries, checkout, migration | eligibility, integration support, Billing, product boundaries |

## How do checkout and billing differ?

Paddle's [pricing page](https://www.paddle.com/pricing) lists checkout, subscriptions, payments, tax and compliance, fraud protection, reporting, and billing support in its pay-as-you-go plan. Stripe documents subscriptions with Managed Payments as available with Stripe Billing. It also lists integration boundaries, including unsupported Connect and certain advanced flows.

| Requirement | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Supported checkout path | The payment interface can decide whether a MoR product fits the architecture. |
| Subscription billing | Stripe documents Managed Payments subscriptions with Stripe Billing. |
| Platform or marketplace | Stripe lists Connect as unsupported for Managed Payments. |
| Physical good or service | Product eligibility changes with what is sold. |

## How should a team compare cost?

Compare the operating model, not two headline rates that include different services. Paddle currently lists 5% plus 50 cents per Checkout transaction, with custom pricing for some businesses. Check Stripe's current Managed Payments, Payments, Billing, and payment-method pricing for the intended flow.

Model the real country, currency, payment-method, average-order-value, refund, invoicing, and subscription mix. Include the work the business would otherwise perform for tax registrations, filings, payment support, reconciliation, fraud, and disputes.

## What changes for a mobile app?

A web billing choice and native in-app billing are separate questions. Apple says apps unlocking digital features or functionality in the app must generally use in-app purchase unless an exception in its [App Review Guidelines](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#in-app-purchase) applies. A provider choice does not replace that current-policy review. [App monetization](/guides/app-monetization/) covers the distinction between digital entitlement, physical commerce, and store rules.

## Which option fits the team?

Evaluate Paddle when the business wants a merchant-of-record model centered on digital products and one supported provider for checkout, billing, tax, and payment support. Evaluate Stripe Managed Payments when an existing Stripe stack or its supported managed-payment path is a fit. Evaluate standard Stripe when the business needs a broader architecture and will remain merchant of record.

Before committing, confirm product eligibility, merchant-of-record status for every flow, checkout and billing needs, remaining responsibilities, the real transaction-cost model, and the migration plan for active customers. [Mobile app analytics](/guides/mobile-app-analytics/) helps keep payment and entitlement records visible after a change.

Refix is built to connect product, subscription, and support signals, so a team can investigate the customer journey around a billing change instead of stopping at a successful charge.
