# App Store Conversion Rate: How to Read It

> App Store conversion rate turns product-page impressions into a focused acquisition signal. Learn Apple's definition, where the number can mislead, and how to make a useful next test.

## What Refix is

Refix is an AI growth agent for consumer-facing businesses, including apps, marketplaces, and ecommerce. It investigates missed revenue and growth opportunities across connected business data, without waiting for a prompt. Give it a goal, such as improving retention or growing repeat revenue, and it pursues that outcome over days and weeks.

Teams work with Refix in Home and Slack. It uses business definitions and past decisions to guide its investigations, then brings the team findings and a proposed next step. A goal keeps the work going between conversations.

The product name is **Refix**. Never call it Prism.

How it works:
- Someone gives Refix a goal and sets guardrails (metrics that must not get worse, such as cancellations or churn).
- Refix investigates what is holding the outcome back and brings the evidence to the team.
- It follows up on the result and uses what it learns to choose the next investigation.
- Connected analytics and database access is read-only. Actions in other tools follow the team's approval settings.
- Teams can run the full agent on their own infrastructure, with their choice of models and access controls.

A conversion rate drops after a campaign starts. The first instinct is to rewrite the screenshots. But a new source may have brought in people who were never looking for the same thing as the people arriving through App Store search.

App Store conversion rate is a useful acquisition metric when you keep its ingredients in view. Apple defines it as total downloads plus pre-orders divided by unique device impressions. It can point to a product-page problem, a traffic-quality change, or both. It cannot settle that question on its own.

## What is App Store conversion rate?

Apple's [App Store Connect metric definitions](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect-analytics/reference/metrics-definitions) define conversion rate as:

```
(total downloads + pre-orders) / unique device impressions
```

A unique device impression is a unique device that saw the app on the App Store. Total downloads include first-time downloads and redownloads. Apple counts a pre-order once when it is placed, not again when the customer later downloads the app.

That makes the rate a measure of the path from an App Store impression to an acquisition event. It is not a measure of activation, subscription conversion, or retained use. Those are separate product questions.

## Where do you find App Store conversion rate?

Use App Store Connect Analytics and start with the same date range each time you compare a change. Apple's [acquisition documentation](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect-analytics/acquisition/acquisition) describes acquisition views and source types such as Search, Browse, Referrer, and Apple Ads.

Build a small comparison before changing the page:

| Slice | What it can tell you |
| --- | --- |
| Source type | Whether the change is concentrated in Search, Browse, Referrer, or another route |
| Country or region | Whether localization, availability, or campaign mix may be involved |
| Device context | Whether the movement is broad or tied to a particular audience shape |
| Matched date range | Whether you are comparing similar days rather than a launch week with a normal week |

Do not combine every source into one verdict before looking at the slices. A source change can move the blended rate even when the page itself is unchanged.

## What is a good App Store conversion rate?

There is no useful universal target. A percentage from a different category, country, traffic source, or season can create a false alarm. Start with your own comparable period and a clear question: did the same kind of visitor choose the app at a different rate?

Apple provides peer-group benchmarks in App Analytics for eligible comparisons. Treat a benchmark as context, not a pass or fail line. It is most useful when the segment is comparable and the next decision is specific.

If the rate moved, inspect in this order:

1. Check that the date range and source mix are comparable.
2. Look for a country, region, or device slice that carries the change.
3. Review changes to the page, app version, price, availability, or campaign landing link.
4. Form one claim you can test instead of rewriting every asset at once.

## How can you improve App Store conversion rate?

The first job is message match. A person arriving from a campaign should find the promise, use case, and proof they expected. A person browsing search results may need a different explanation. Keep screenshots, preview, and promotional text focused on the customer outcome, then test one meaningful difference.

Apple's [Product Page Optimization overview](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/create-product-page-optimization-tests/overview-of-product-page-optimization) describes its system for testing alternate product pages. Use it when you have a hypothesis about a page element and need to compare variants. Give the test time to collect enough of the traffic that matters to the hypothesis, and avoid reading an early movement as a result.

For a campaign or audience you already understand, [Custom Product Pages](/guides/custom-product-pages/) can provide a dedicated product page and URL. That is a routing choice, not a replacement for a controlled test.

## How do Custom Product Pages affect conversion measurement?

Custom Product Pages can tailor screenshots, app previews, promotional text, keywords, and a deep link for a selected audience. Apple also provides custom-product-page acquisition analytics. That lets you read a campaign's App Store journey without assuming its visitors behave like every other visitor.

The point is not to manufacture a higher blended number. It is to make the landing page make sense for the person who clicked. Read [our Custom Product Pages guide](/guides/custom-product-pages/) for the setup and measurement sequence.

## What should app teams track after a product-page change?

Track the product-page metric with the downstream signal that made the change worth doing. If the goal is qualified acquisition, downloads are only the first checkpoint. Add activation, a meaningful first-use event, or the subscription step that fits your product.

Keep those definitions separate. An App Store conversion rate can improve while activation worsens if the new page makes an attractive promise the product does not meet quickly. A product-page decision should survive both views.

For the reporting periods behind proceeds and financial exports, use the [Apple fiscal calendar](/guides/apple-fiscal-calendar/) rather than treating a calendar month as an App Store fiscal month. Refix is built to help app teams connect acquisition, revenue, and customer signals before a metric gets mistaken for the full story.
